WHAT'S IN.... WHAT'S OUT... SUMMER '16 IN THE HAMPTONS! PLUS MIXING,MINGLING AND MORE AT THE OLD STOVE PUB!

Trends may come and go but when it comes to the Hamptons, trends come and go like tissue paper.   So, while it wasn't that long ago Rick Astley and torn sweatshirts were all the rage here on the east end... shut up, it really was hip not that long ago.   There are new trends that have invaded homes from Westhampton to Montauk this year and lucky for you, I'm here to tell you all about them.     Because as everyone knows... I define what's cool!   Cool like listening to Barry Manilow at a TGI Friday's.

In:  Buddhaberry, Sag Harbor - GENIUS!   Self serve frozen yogurt where children young and old can fill up their cups to the rim and pay by the weight!   Yes,  it's also really good and healthier than ice cream as long as you don't pile on the Reese's and gummy bears.    It's also a scene on weekend nights with more mingling than Tindr.

HOT!  Especially the Brazil thing.. but not Zika Brazil!
Out:   Speedway, Wainscott -  Yes, they have Ben and Jerry's but the melted and refrozen texure just isn't quite as appealing as it was when Rick Astley ruled the airwaves!

Vineyardvines.com
In:  Havaianas -  Cheap fashionable footwear that says, "Hey, I don't need no stinkin' Gucci loafers to look cool."

Out:  Crocs -   Do I really need to spell it out?   They jumped the shark when you could spot them easily at the Mall of America.

In:  Vineyard Vines -  Great polo shirts, shorts, t-shirts and more with snappy yet preppy designs that aren't a ton of money.    There is also a great outlet store at Tanger in Riverhead for those of you who are even cheaper than I am.

Out:  US. Polo Association Polo Shirts  - Ummmmmmmm, We know they're not Ralph Lauren, so why are you trying to fool us?

In:  Bagels from Goldberg's in Wainscott - Fresh bagels with friendly service and no weird lectures about the state of immigration at the register.   I love this place!

Out:  Thomas' Bagels from Walbaums in East Hampon - you would have thought I was drowning kittens in the salt water pool when I brought these home a few weeks ago.   I apologize everyone!  It will never happen again!
Old stove pub... .drinks in the yard!!!
It's ain't the Swamp but.....

Finally something that hopefully will be very "In" for this summer....  Saturday cocktails at the Old Stove Pub iin Sagaonponack.   Every Saturday from 5-7pm, they'll be opening their doors to east end members of the LGBT community for a Saturday mixer.  Discount drinks and free passed appetizers will be offered in addition to a chance for great mixing and mingling.   There's also plenty of parking available and you'll have the chance to see if anyone with a sense of fashion still wears Crocs.   If they do, I predict they will be shunned!  The Old Stove Pub is located at 3516 Montauk Highway, opposite Town Line Rd.     631-537-3300
See you at Old Stove Pub... Saturdays 5-7pm.

MMMMMMMMMM.... DONUTS... AND TUNA TARTARE! -UPDATED!!!

In case you missed it there was a lot of buzz a few months ago as Tom Colicchio and Topping Rose House parted ways.    Much of the well deserved criticism revolved around the fact that the prices were steep and the food was just a tad too "precious."     Well, when it was recently announced that Jean-Georges Vongerichten would be moving into that prime location, it was with a skeptical eye that many Hamptons folks awaited the arrival of it's latest celebrity chef.     I mean, doesn't everyone want quail and sweet breads when visiting the beach?
www.toppingrosehouse.com
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... donuts!
But guess what?  A good thing happened on the way to Bridgehampton.   Rather than taking a step on the fancy side, the restaurateur took a page more from his Inn at Pound Ridge menu and gave it a Hamptons spin.    Jean-Georges at the Topping Rose House is now open and ready for business.  While make no mistake the bill is going to cost you a few more dollars than an Olive Garden Prix Fixe, the prices are reasonable by local standards and the menu is actually pretty accessible.   The restaurant was open over the Memorial Day and served dishes from the new menu including; Tuna Tartare with Avacado and ginger marinade for $22, Kale Salad with Lemon and Parmesan $15, Parmesan Crusted Organic Chicken for $32 and a Cheeseburger with Frizzled Onions and House made pickles for $21.     For the vegetarian in the group, they also have a Garden Vegetable Brown Rice bowl with Salsa Verde for $26.    While I haven't had the chance to check it out yet, if it's anything like the Westchester outlet I have no doubt it will be packed from now until Labor Day!  For more information or reservations, you can try calling 631-537-0870 or go online by clicking here!

Meanwhile, something is apparently brewing in Sag Harbor and Homer Simpson will very happy.    I was on the street and I glazed over to find out that  Grindstone Coffee and Donuts is coming to town.   The hole deal is getting ready to set up shot at the location that was formerly occupied by Pepalajefa at 7 Main Street in Sag Harbor.   Fronted by two veteran coffee shope folks,  locals Kyle Shanahan and Anna Coffman will have brioche style donuts in such mouth watering flavors as strawberry shortcake, chocolate coconut and of course the traditional glazed!  The two are also making a point of sourcing all of the ingredients from local providers like Mecox Dairy and Amber Waves Farm in Amagansett.    In fact, they're taking the local angle so seriously they've decided to start working on a beach plum filled jelly donut recipe.     But if you're hoping these will be low calorie, fat free, taste free confections, forget it.  The plan is for real "super buttery brioche donuts"... dare I say it's a the Hamptons answer to a cronut..... a bronut?    The shop will also have a range of gourmet coffees and teas to help unclog your arteries.       Look for Grindstone Coffee and Donuts to open sometime at the end of the month!    One final thought before I go?  Some folks say, "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels"... except for donuts which say, "skinny can go "f" itself."

WARNING TO ALL EASTER BUNNIES.... AND SMALL DOGS! HAPPY EASTER! SUGGESTIONS FOR BRUNCH!

Break out the pastels and the whites... it's now officially ok to wear your fancy duds!  Well as of Sunday anyway.   So after the bunny has dropped the basket, where are some great places to wear your best bonnet?   Well look no further, Hamptons Chatter is here to help.  Here are my top 3 suggestions:

Page at 63 Main in Sag Harbor (page63main.com, 631-725-1810)  will have an a la carte brunch menu from 11 to 4 featuring such holiday favorites as leg of lamb and Eggs Benedict.   They'll also have plenty of champagne and mimosas to help with that headache from the all the little kiddies sugar high!
So CUTE.. and hopefully not on any menu!

Topping Rose in Bridgehampton (toppingrosehouse.com, 631-537-0870) will also have an al carte brunch menu featuring everything Brioche Donuts to Painted Hill Short Rib hash from 11:30 to 3p.   They'll also have activities for the kids and a giant Easter Bunny around for photographs.  You'll be able to order EXTRA champagne without drama.  Earplugs will not be provided.

Barons Cove in Sag harbor (baronscove.com, 631-725-2101) will be hosting an Easter egg hunt for the kids... so hopefully they'll be outside.   Brunch will be served from 11 to 4p and feature all your holiday favorites including lamb, roast beef and rabbit stew.  OK, actually there is no rabbit stew.... that would be kind of cruel.   Don't cha think!?    I mean... "Thank you Easter Bunny for the chocolate... now jump into the pot!?"

Speaking of Easter Bunnies, they need to be watching their eggs and hops these days.   While I'm not sure if it's a real warning or where the heck it originates, there is a message circulating on the internet and Facebook about there being a larger number of Hawks this season on the east coast.   The alleged warning has been issued by "Park Rangers" and "Veterinarians" to pet owners who have dogs or cats
WARNING: FOR OWNERS OF SMALL PETS
that weigh less then 12 pounds.   Apparently our small furry friends run the risk of being swooped away.   I actually had a friend who swore that happened to her pet a few years back but I question that particular incident and attribute it more to her 3 martini breakfast.    "I saw it... my dog flew away!"   Kind of scary considering it was a German Shepard. Anyway, all kidding aside I did some digging online and while the "warning" may possibly be bogus, the risk is actually quite real.    But before you panic and call your local veterinarian for advice or veteran with a gun on addressing the potential problem, just remember these birds of prey are FEDERALLY PROTECTED!      So what can you do?   Well here is are a few tips for keeping your pets safe.

-Keep them leashed and supervise when outdoors.
-Remove bird feeders.   They attract small birds and mice which in tern attract raptors.
-Put hhiny objects that move out of the yard, such as silver streamers.   They will scare off the birds.
-Build a pen with a wire mesh for your pet to play.

So keep your pets safe, have a great weekend and remember SUMMER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER.  Which means traffic.   Yeah!

BUSTING A SUMMER RENTAL MYTH... AND DOPPIO IS DONE-I-OH! AGAIN.

Doppio in Sag Harbor.... brown paper seems to be it's color!
Good Morning all.. or is it afternoon?  Either way, HC as some people like to call this blog has been off the grid for the past few months.  It's been a period of reflection and real estate and a media blackout.  I've ignored TV, radio and the internet for weeks now.  So before I read the papers about the Jeb versus Hillary show... I mean nobody was going to vote for "him," I did some recon in and around the Hamptons to get the latest in our neck of the woods.

So word about town in Sag Harbor is that DOPPIO is definitely DONE-I-OH.   As if the incident of last summer's sudden shuttering wasn't a big enough omen for you, the Italian bistro has packed it's bags and headed off for greener and perhaps less discerning pastures.    But while this is a surprise for virtually nobody, the big buzz is about what's going in there!  So, what will it be?   Apparently, it's going to be brown paper on the windows for the next few months.  Unconfirmed word about town is that the state of the space is in a bit on the worn side and a renovation is afoot.  If I have wrong information here, let me know and I'll fix it!  I still miss the old "Paradise" in Sag Harbor.  Please can somebody talk to somebody and bring it back?    It had good service, good food and a great atmosphere, something far too many restaurateurs in the Hamptons have a hard time understanding.

Meantime, why is it so tough to find a summer rental this season?  Well it's not as the NY Times would have you believe.     The mad rush that they report every year ("act now if you want your summer Hamptons get away) as having taking place is more myth than reality.    The truth is with all of the new regulations that include rental permits, registries and blood oaths more than a few home owners have decided NOT to rent rather than deal with all of the drama.    Now, I'm sure some agents and brokers are going to say, "not at all."   But I'm speaking from my experiences in the past few weeks.    I've called numerous landlords about renting only to have them inform me the house is no longer available.     I'm not sure if this is a good or a bad thing but I can tell you, if you're debating on renting your home this coming season... make sure to get the permit and protect yourself into the pool... it's smaller this year than it's been in a long time!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL... MORTGAGE NEWS.... PLUS WINNERS OF OUR (lame) DECORATING CONTEST!

So there's good news and bad news here.  The bad news is you people are essentially lazy.    The good news is everyone who entered my holiday decorating contest is a winner!   Yes, I
got 4 entries.  One of which was a friend who was actually staying in my house.   So he'll get a prize along with Lisa Barone of Sag Harbor and Deanna Covino of Hampton Bays, the gang at Baron's Cove and D. Strohmeir.    So anyway, happy holidays all even though I will never do a contest like this again.   BAH HUMBUG!   Here are the winners...
Deanna Covino of Hampton Bays

Lisa Barone of Sag Harbor
D Strohmeir of East Hampton

Meanwhile, lots of news about interest rates.  They're up... and people are upset!    But wait.... defying the hike, rates actually went down?  I'm so confused!   But while folks like me are waiting for the dust to settle on what all of this actually means there's still lots of news in the lending biz.   In fact, one thing I recently learned ... wait.. why am I telling you... watch it for yourself.   Recently mortgage guru Melissa Cohn of MC Home Loan sat down with me to discuss what's happening.

FINALLY... a little something fun from the 80's music fanatic that I am.  It's 60,000 LED lights dancing to the song "We Three Kings" by Book of Love!    Gotta love this!!

THEY HAD US AT MERLOT! WOLFFER KITCHEN AND GREY GARDENS AT BAY STREET!

So, it's been one of those mornings but here I am anyway.  Without going into details, I went to brush my teeth this morning and instead I ended up well lets just say, I doubt I'll have inflammation on my gums today.   But before I digress, I'm ready to recap the glorious life of the glamorous and irritated on the East End.

So, last night I had the chance to visit the highly anticipated Wolffer Kitchen in Sag Harbor.   So here's the good news and the bad news.  The good news is it's pretty good.   The bad news is it should have been better.    Since it's the first foray into food for the local vineyard, I'll give them time to let this potentially fine dine breath.   Located at 29 Main Street in the village, the restaurant opens with a series of folding doors that open up and make it a great place to dine and watch the world go by.    The menu on the other hand is a little more closed with a smaller selection of options.  The wine menu on the other hand is rather extensive and features of course Wolffer wines, numerous imports and this in addition to a few local vineyards including Bedell.

The service as I sat for dinner last night was on their game from start to finish.   I started my dinner with a small Greek salad which was absolutely fantastic, a perfect size with a delicate blend of feta, olives and greens.   Oh my god, do I now sound like a food critic? I have to stop!  Anyway, for an entree I had fresh tuna grilled over pasta which was nice and light but a little too light on flavor.    My dining companion (who you can figure out) had a vegetable platter with I believe some fava beans and he thought it was awesome.   Perhaps the comment that I'm more "suited for heavier flavors", i.e. bolognese is my favorite should be taken into account.   So what I'm saying is I liked Wolffer Kitchen, I just wasnt' crazy about it.   Perhaps I'll hit it up again once they get more time under their belt but I have no doubt it's going to get better!  Wolffer Kitchen is open daily at 5:30pm and takes reservations on their facebook page or by calling 631-725-0101.
Betty Buckley and Rachel York... The Edies.

I also had a chance to head over to Bay Street Theater last night and catch a performance of the musical "Grey Gardens."   If you don't already know the story, shame on you and go directly to Fire Island.  You should know the story!   But anyway, it stars Broadway veterans Betty Buckley and Rachael York as the highly entertaining and dysfunctional society duo.   This is the show that Bay Street was born to perform!    I know tickets are going fast so if you're thinking of going to see it, get your tickets now! It's a great show with great performers and a really enjoyable way to spend your evening in Sag Harbor.  It would be an even better night if you call me first and make an offer on the actual Grey Gardens... not that it's currently for sale but it's the Hamptons and you never know!

I'm sorry today's blog was like a review section from Junior Highlights,,, but hey, it's mine and I write what I want to write!

!! YES!!! I USE TOO MANY EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!! BUT I'M TALKING WINE,PUPPIES AND WHAT TOWN IS FOR YOU!!!

For the party animals in us all!
It's not the dog days of summer yet but its time for some doggone fun!   UGH.  Even I know that is a really bad pun!  First a little advertisement for a REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD CAUSE!   The Southampton Animal Shelter holds it's Fourth Annual Unconditional Love Gala this Saturday.   The shelter was originally operated by the town but due to budget cuts, the town shut the shelter.   A group of concerned locals got together to save the shelter and formed the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation!  Ok, I'm a total sucker for animal charities.   I give to the ASPCA, ARF and I bought a ticket to this event.   I know my stigmata wounds are already acting up... I'm a saint!   It's a great cause.... a really fun benefit and you can help out some of the cutest Hamptonites around!  You know the cute friendly ones who don't cut you off, text and drive, brag about their decorator or flash their Panerai!  Bella and Russell can't go but I know are giving their full support to the benefit.   Thanks to my friends Sarah Alvarez and Molly Molly for telling me about this event!  If you want to purchase tickets and help out... CLICK HERE!

So often I get asked as a real estate agent, "which town is best?"    You know, that's a really hard question to answer.   I really think every town has some very unique benefits and it's own pluses and minuses.     So I developed a little quiz here to help you find the town that's right for you.... it's fun...
it's silly... and eerily accurate;  So here we go.

1)   On Saturday afternoons your footwear of choice during the summer is ...
       a) Barefoot
Where should you go???
       b) Gucci or Prada
       c) Teva's
       d) Custom Monogrammed slippers

2)    While driving a convertible around town, Paula Abdul comes on the radio.  Do you...
        a) Remark "she was a singer? or "Who TF."
        b) Remark "I wish they were playing "Straight-up."
        c) Reduce the volume and hope nobody hears you listening.
        d) You would never play the radio while your top was down!

3)    My idea of a memorable evening is.....
        a) Not remembering how I got home.
        b) Sitting next to Gwyneth and Jerry at The Grill.
        c) Getting an invite for sailing and sunset cocktails.
        d) Hosting an awesome dinner party and getting some great hostess gifts!

4)     My favorite drink before dinner is...
         a) Red Bull and Vodka.
         b) A nice Rose or Sancerre.
         c) An awesome margarita with
         d) A martini... shaken not stirred.

Wolffer Kitchen is open!
Well here are the results... if you answered "a" to more than three of the questions, you need to hang in Montauk baby.   More than 3 "b" answers you should try East Hampton to Water Mill.... "c" It's Sag Harbor or Amagansett or Hampton Bays.... and "d" it's Southampton or Quogue.   If you answered less than 3, leave me alone.  I don't have all day to write this damn blog.

Finally, what's the latest buzz in Sag Harbor?  Well the Cuddy has set sail and Wolffer Kitchen has arrived in port.   The soft opening was last night and tonight they'll be serving food and hopefully lots of Wolffer Rose to keep that Summer Buzz going.   They'll be unlocking the doors tonight at 5.  I'll ty to stop by or at the very least get the early reviews to you asap.   If you're curious about the complete menu... click here.

HATE CROWDS? NO RESERVATIONS?! NO PROBLEM!! A QUICK GUIDE TO HAMPTONS DELIVERY!

One of the things I like least about summer in the Hamptons is the crowds.   While I'm not an agoraphobic, the idea of dealing with traffic and pushy patrons is sometimes more than I can handle. Besides, I get extreme guilt leaving my dogs behind... because they like to party as much as the next animal.  So, unlike NYC where you can have a cup of coffee delivered for free, finding door to door service out east is a little more difficult.   Virtually nobody delivers in the Hamptons. I know White's Pharmacy delivers... but cough drops and Metamucil don't quite satisfy my hunger like they should.   What do you do when your cupboards are bare, traffic is backed up and everybody is hungry?   Well, here's the skinny on getting chubby without leaving home.....

There are two.. repeat only TWO Chinese restaurants that I think are worth the weight in MSG. Number 1 (631-726-8080) in Water Mill and Pheonix in Wainscott (631-537-0011).    There are a few others in the area but one of them actually has Immodium on the menu which to me is a big red flag...OK I'm kidding.   While my two recommendations aren't exactly Shun Lee or Mr. Chow's, they're both good, hearty and reasonably priced.  My personal favorites are the "scallion pancakes" at Pheonix and the "spicy chicken and broccoli" at #1.    Both are the best Chinese delivery in the HAMPTONS!  Although, that's kind of like saying it's the friendliest restaurant in France.

When it' comes to Pizza. There are no Domino's in the Hamptons. Which is a good thing. But darn it, why is it so hard to get a pizza brought to your door on a rainy Saturday night!?   Well there are only a few choices for delivery pizza at a good price.  In Montauk, you have Sausages (631-668-1144) .. In Bridgehampton there's American Pie (631-613-6177) in the Commons and Southampton has Paul's (631-283-1861) and Melrose East.   In East Hampton you have Pizza and Things Spring's Pizza. Customers like it for their reasonable prices, friendly staff and fresh ingredients (631) 324-7974.

Also in East Hampton, the Red Horse Market will deliver groceries or prepared foods with a $100 minimum purchase.  I'm pretty sure you can get them to bring one of their pizzas to the door as well.  By the way, throw a fresh mozzarella in there for good measure and melt some extra on the pie.

If you're looking for something a little more exotic you can try Saaz in Southampton.    They deliver and according to some, they'll go all the way to East Hampton.    That's a good thing too since the New York Times raved the food is "uniformly excellent... a long overdue addition to Hamptons dining."     Saaz - (631) 259-2222 - is located just as you come into Southampton on CR 39 at the former site of Mason Ole  - where Montezuma always got his revenge!      Saaz is a much better welcome to the east end!

While I'm sure there are others that may deliver, this is the list I came up with based on my own personal experience and those I know around town.

YOU CANOLI IMAGINE THE CHANGE IN WAINSCOTT.... TAKE A PEEK! PLUS A TALE SO STUPID IT HAS TO BE TRUE!

Makeover Mangia!
If you've been through Wainscott lately,  you've probably noticed there's a whole lot of something going on at the former location of Georgica and Saracen restaurants.   The location is now the home of Osteria Salina and the inside has been given face lift that would make Cher green with envy!  Its been a much needed change for the 130 year old building that was more recently the home of ruckus night clubs catering to the hard partying "bottle and banquette" crowd.    Instead neighbors now have a traditional Sicilian restaurant in one of the most charming locations around.   In fact, if you ask me it looks like they spent a pretty penne to make it look good!  Sorry for the pun.

The Georgica Room with a view!
The restaurant which was formally located on School Street in Bridgehampton has now been expanded by purveyor Tim Gaglio and his wife Cinzia (the chef) into a larger 225 seat venue overlooking Georgica Pond.   The menu will remain the same and feature old favorites like Charred Octopus, Polpette (amazing italian meatballs), Mezzi Rigitoni alla Siciliana, fresh seafood specials but with the addition of pizzas cooked in the brick oven that was a staple back when the restaurant was "Sapore di Mare."     If you don't remember back that far then you certainly don't know the reason Route 27 is so close to the site!?  Well I'll tell you, it's owed to two feuding brothers, one who designed highways for the state and the other who owned a house in Wainscott!
Classic design meets chic renovation!

Well enough about the location, the food which comes with a Sicilian pedigree (Cinzia comes from a long line of Italian restauranteurs) that goes all the way back to Sorra Italy has been earning raves from local celebs like Billy Joel, Alan Alda and Howard Stern to name a few.   In fact, I bet next door neighbor Ron Perlman will soon swing by for some Bucatini con Sarde ... the smells will get 'em and I heard he loves to walk everywhere!   There's no doubt it will be attracting the same crowd plus a few new ones with the expanded dining room.   Osteria Salina will open it's doors quietly this Thursday (5/21) night at 5pm and be open for business year round.   It's a great addition to the area and if you have any doubt they're aiming for a different crowd than the last establishment, stop by on Sunday's from 1 to 9pm when they'll be serving traditional Sophia Loren sized "family style" dinners.    If you want a reservation and my guess is your going to need them... check out the restaurant on OPENTABLE.COM

As any real estate on the east end will tell you, dealing with Summer rentals is never easy.    This Friday will no doubt too be another hair raising experience for agents all over as tenants start to move into their seasonal rentals.  Yes, I'll soon be getting calls about defective toasters, noisy neighbors and even the occasional call asking for an address (write it down before you go out drinking).     Well it's a few
years later and now enough time has passed to tell a tale I from a few years ago when one tenant called me complaining about the wireless Internet.   I explained I wasn't an expert but I would swing by and take a look.    Apparently the code for the wifi wasn't working and I thought I'd give it a shot.    When I arrived I input the code and bing!  It worked!   What was the problem?   Well, when I gave them the code in the e mail I wrote "the password is case sensitive xyz."  Yes, you got it... they wrote "CASE SENSITIVE" when inputting the code.  By the way, English was their first language and it was a $200k+ seasonal rental!    Only in the Hamptons!

VALENTINE'S DAY IDEAS IF YOU WANT TO BREAK UP.... PLUS, SNOW....AGAIN... SO RELAX.

Doesn't this scream romance? Murph's
Happy Valentines Day Weekend everyone!    It's that time of year when every newspaper and blogger in the Hamptons has ideas about romantic getaways and where to go.   But where do you go when you want to break up? Forget the romance ambiance of 1770 House or East Hampton Grill, take your date to one of these notable locations and you'll be sure to be single by Monday!

Murphs, Sag Harbor - It's not that the place isn't good.   But there is absolutely nothing romantic
about this place.  It's loud, it's packed and the idea of having a quiet conversation with any sort of privacy is out of the question.    The only way anyone gets romantic there is if the beer goggles are so tight you become oxygen deprived!

Village Hardware, East Hampton - Here's the way this one goes down.    You buy two tickets to see "Fifty Shades of Grey" at the matinee or 4:00 pm show.   You then promise a nice early romantic dinner after the movie.   After suffering through aforementioned movie, you remark how "hot" you got during the Hardware Store Scene(above).   You stroll over to Village Hardware so you can buy "a few things."   When you get to the store, head right to the staple guns!  If your date hasn't already disappeared then maybe you should.   RUN!

The front door is only a few more feet!
Harlow, Sag Harbor -  Who doesn't love a nice romantic location!?    Yes, they're closed for the season.... but if you order this weekend maybe you'll get your entree by Memorial Day Weekend.   If you want to actually try to have food, stop by the IGA first for two sandwiches and a small bag of Sun Chips.   It's all about the view right... frost bite or not!

Now for the other part of the weekend that has everyone in a tizzy.   The projected 6'' of snow we're
supposed to get this Saturday night into Sunday.  This comes hot on the tail of a  reported "frenzy" for seasonal rentals.   As I said on Monday, so many drives and walkways are covered with hard packed ice, many sellers and homeowners are blocking showings to protect against a potential lawsuit.   Yes some good homes were rented already last fall or by the renters with good snow boots but inventory is still good.     So, don't believe the hype... sip your hot chocolate, relax and have a wonderful Valentine's Day Weekend!    Hopefully you won't be going to Village Hardware or Murph's!

A WEEKEND WITH THE DUKE & ALEC... STACKS OF CONTROVERSY IN SAG.... BADLY BEHAVING BEAGLES!

Curious what to do this weekend in the Hamptons?  Well here are a few suggestions to keep yourself from going totally nuts with cabin fever!

One easy thing you might want to consider is going to see a good movie.    So what's playing in down this weekend?  Let's take a look.

Wait, I don't know a single one of these movies!  FULL TIME?  Is that a porn flick?    Where is "Jupiter Ascending" or at the very least "March of the Penguins"..... which I think is still playing here!  Oh wait, "Managers" isn't that the direct to video movie with Dane Cook?   Well if none of these titles appeal to you Pilgrim, maybe you'd want to go see John Wayne in "The Searchers" at Guild Hall.  Alec Baldwin is hosting another in the Hampton's Film Festival's Winter Series with a special screening of the John Ford Classic.   For more information you can try clicking here!     Personally, I'm still waiting for them to host a screening of director Jack Smight's masterpiece "Airport 75."    It's an epic story which analyzes man's inhumanity to man in the metaphor of a 747 without a pilot!    Helen Reddy's tour de force performance as Sister Ruth and Charlton Heston's romantic chemistry with George Kennedy... it's no wonder why this epic is considered a classic!

Stacks and stacks of controversy!  The new Harbor Market!
Meanwhile, if you want something with a little more drama you can go online and read all about how some residents of Sag Harbor trying to stop the opening of a new market!   The Harbor Market and kitchen is to be located at the site of the old Espresso!    Apparently neighbors are fuming over an upgrade in the ventilation system and what is being perceived as a potential new noise maker!   Now Espresso has been there for years and some are criticizing local residents for trying to have things their way.... after the fact.  Meanwhile opponents are saying it's just a bit too industrial for a residential neighborhood.      Now we all know it's hard enough with all the regulations out here for small businesses to survive.    So, I'm not getting into the fray here but I do think sometimes those who live in illegal glass houses should be careful before throwing stones!

Busted! Bella trying to hide her butts!
Finally, longer days can't come fast enough for me... when is daylight savings time anyway?  But while I'm wishing for warmer longer days, I am going to share a little something that makes spying on my dogs Bella and Russell in the backyard at night a little easier.    They're called NightIze and they sell for about  $6 on Amazon . It's as simple as a a clip on a collar and squeeze on the light to use.   Do they work?   Well let's just put it this way, I'm finding a lot less strange dogs hanging around ....and no more cigarette butts and beer bottles from my two trouble makers going outside.

I hate when my dogs smell like tobacco!

p.s.   I don't have an editor on this blog, I'm just happy I'm getting it done.    I'll fix it over the course of the next few days but lighten up folks... I have another job!

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, No it's YOUR NEIGHBOR.... and is Scuttle Hole the new L.I.E.?

Forget the privet hedge, drones are here!
Sure Martha Stewart loves her Drone according to Time Magazine but do her neighbors?    Yes, one man's toy is another man's torment and here in the Hamptons is no exception.    Sources have told me one high powered Hamptons resident has taken his/her  Hatfiled/McCoys situation with his/her next door neighbor to a new level.    This person is apparently buzzing the neighbors yard and taking pictures of sunbathing guests and family.   Yes these poor residents now are being harassed by a techno-voyeur!  While they haven't reported anything to the police (Duh, who wants to end up in the police blotter) they have been soliciting help from landscapers, housekeepers etc on shooting that puppy down!   So forget the deer cull everyone, we're hunting drones!

Meanwhile, as local towns continue to crack down on Realtors and their signs (smaller, smaller, smaller) locals have also started complaining about the proliferation of builder/contractor signs.  Yes, real estate is the best form of advertising and that's why some local firms are leaving their signs up on
homes that are not even on the market!    Take Scuttle Hole Rd. in Bridgehampton for example where one contractor has had a sign up for nearly 3 years and the property isn't even for sale!    There's also a similar situation on Ocean Rd. in Bridgehampton where one of my friends quipped, "it's starting to look like the LIE before the Midtown Tunnel!"  Make fun of Realtors and our obsession with signs if you'd like but at least we limit ours in size and duration!  Shouldn't a home actually be under construction or on the market for a sign to be put up?  Yeah, that one big guy out here has signs everywhere but he doesn't leave them up for 2 years after the house sells!!!  I'm just saying! By the way, don't even get me started on those pop up signs for the "Our drivers your car" signs on every corner!

Million Dollar Listing …errr… Bankruptcy… and Fine Hamptons Dining on a Budget!

Call me wacky but I always find it hard to believe that someone who owns a pricey piece of property would ever allow it to go to auction.   Well maybe that's why I'm just a humble Hamptons farmer… er… real estate agent.   Anyway, it's happening two blocks from the beach in the most expensive zip code in the country on Sesascape Lane, in Sagaponack.   The home originally listed at (click for details) $5,995,000 in '10, briefly went down to $4.9 only to go back up to $5.3 is now on the auction block with Maltz and Company of Central Islip.   The auction takes
Million dollar bankruptcy!  photo from TRULIA.COM
place this Thursday at the "auctioneer's Gallery, 39 Windsor Place in Central Islip."    In order to register to bid, all prospective bidders must "present a bank check in the amount of $260,000."   Check Maltz's website for all the details.  The property which is quite charming will no doubt be torn down by whoever buys it.  I guess when you have $11,000,000 properties in the hood and J-Lo around the corner, humble just won't cut it with the neighbors.    Darn, I would have loved to try and sell this puppy.  It's on a great block and an elegant and unpretentious home.    While it's too late to take a tour of the house, it's not too late for the auction so get your bids and your bank checks ready everyone!   I'm sure this is just great for property values!

UPDATE… according to my sources, the property went for $3.800,00!  Not bad!

Finally, a little something I didn't know.  Apparently the local Hess is a gas station and a dining establishment!  If you don't believe me, just look no further than the photo attached.  When I asked the attendant on duty about what other delicacies they feature he pointed out the hot dogs, the sandwiches and more!!!  So of course, since I'm more of a wine drinker than a beer drinker I asked the attendant if they charged a corking fee.   His response, after I explained what I meant, "no problem, we won't charge you."    He chuckled and obviously got where I was going once I took a pic of the sign.    So who said there is no inexpensive dining in the Hamptons!?  Kids we're going to the Hess station!!!

Finally…..

A Year After Sandy Generator Sales Still Soar.... and Fall Images of the Hamptons!!!

Ok, this year was a lot prettier than last year.  Hurricane Sandy ripped through the East End a little more than a year ago,  leaving much of the region without power for as long as 3 weeks.  Yes, I was one of them.    Since then homeowners have been exploring their options to prevent their milk from souring and the Internet from going down.    One of the most popular solutions has been purchasing a home generator.    From the simple gasoline lawn mower engine variety to the more complex, heres a quick intro some of the basic facts from the folks at East Hampton Energy Solutions!

Sure, the pools are closed and the beach is a little bit nippy.  But if you've ever had a doubt that the Hamptons are spectacular in the fall then look no further.   Here are some of my favorite sites in and around the East End.
Scarecrows line Main St. Amagansett, thanks to the kids from the local elementary school!
North Haven foliage or as a news anchor I once worked with called it... Foil-age!

Mill Hill Lane, East Hampton Village.

The center of Sag Harbor Village!

The prettiest tree in the Hamptons, seriously!  Look at the Shape!  Brick Kiln and Scuttle Hole Rds.

A special OCSAR'S edition... plus a little chat on celebs in the Hamptons!

Hi guys, I normally don't post on Saturdays but what the heck.  It's Oscar Weekend in Hollywood and since we here in the Hamptons have our fair share of residents attending, I thought it was worth a bonus  Hamptons Chatter on the connection between the two.     Yeah,  I know this isn't quite the quality of say the Today Show but we'll get there soon.  It's been a long time since I did anything like this and my editor is doing his best to make us all look good.   So, that being said my second VIDEO blog.      Is it a  little wacky and rambling, yes.  But I hope you enjoy anyway.   A special thanks to my former anchor Bill McCuddy for doing this along with Steven Gaines, Author of Philistines at the Hedgerow.  So live from my kitchen... Hamptons Chatter!

Sag Harbor has a new culinary Muse!

I thought I was done for the year but like Al Pacino in GODFATHER III, "they keep bringing me back!" I'm not sure who the "they" are but I guess it's the fact this week has been so darn busy on the East End. It's like July trying to find a parking space in any of the villages. So now back to the news... good news folks... the former JLX Bistro/Pommes Cafe
(I had to use JLX because I don't think anyone knew the Pommes Cafe) will soon be taken over by the folks behind MUSE in Water Mill. Chef Chef Matthew Guiffrida will be bringing his unique and diverse menu to one of the best locations in Sag Harbor. Let's just hope he brings his amazing fondue... YES FONDUE... from MUSE to the new location. Yeah, I know fondue is not something that will help me win any "hard body" contest!

Located on the end of Main St., the space has gone through several incarnations over the past few years. But I think it has more to do with bad management than it being a bad location. Besides, if anyone can make this work I'm convinced Guiffrida can do it. I've always loved MUSE but since I live in East Hampton, found the trek to Water Mill a little much especially in the summer. So, I'm thrilled he's taking over this space in Sag Harbor. In fact, I asked Matthew if he'll be doing any of his cooking classes in Sag Harbor and he said, yes! He also told me his menu will be similar to that of MUSE but with a few more pasta and seafood dishes added.

Speaking of the man behind the stove, Matthew Guiffrida if any one of my friends who still works in television reads this blog, take note! Who was one of the first people to give Bobby Flay a gig on TV?! You're right, it
was ME! Well let me tell you Guiffrida should be your next food segment booking. I went to his cooking class and not only was it an amazing night of food and wine... LOTS OF WINE ACTUALLY... but Matthew is charming, funny and fast. He should be doing television! Matthew good luck with the new place and make sure we get invited to that opening hopefully this March!

Now for a little bit of bad news. It seems the restaurant that was the BEACH HOUSE is no longer. What started out in my opinion one of the best new restaurants of Summer 2011 has become a victim of the off season blues. According to owner Michael Gluckman, he may be back in another
incarnation soon. I'm hoping so and I'm also hoping the new restaurant serves what I thought was some of the best TUNA TAR TARE around. Ok, hopefully I'm done... and done with blogging about food. I'm going back to the gym this afternoon and hopefully I'll blog more about working out in 2012!!! Wish me luck!

Engel and Volkers closes Southampton post Nestseekers takes over!

It's seems a scandal and a sluggish market was more than they could handle. The Uber firm of Engel and Volkers has packed it up and sold their Hamptons Out posts (including the brand new East Hampton location) to NestSeekers. Apparently employees were told Friday afternoon about their "new opportunities." If you remember this isn't the first time for the NestSeekers out east, they had an out post in Sag Harbor which lasted for about a year. Let's see if the second time is the charm?

No more EH Village beach passes.... and a new fitness studio (sort of) in Sag Harbor!

It's official, East Hampton Village has officially ran out of 2011 Non-resident beach passes. So if you don't already have one, it's Indian Wells for you. But before you head out there make sure you at least have a town pass. There are plenty of those.

Well it's beginning to look a lot like spring time in the Hamptons. The crocus' are starting to pop up, some trees are budding and the stores and restaurants are getting prepped for the influx of summer visitors.

One of the more interesting renovations or expansions going on right now is wellNEST (yes, it's supposed to be spelled that way!) in Sag Harbor. In case you are not familiar with the shop, it was started by Richard Ash, MD, dedicated to organic and sustainable well being, from vitamins to juices and even eyewear. It's philosophy is all about better living inside and out. Well now they're opening a WellNEST fitness studio. Set for a May 1 launch and hoping to give Lululemon a run for their money, the studio will feature BHAKTI YOGA, a spiritual approach to the exercise that will also incorporate natural oils and aromatheropy (if my research is correct). Anyway, if you want more information give WellNest at call at 631-899-4600.

Oh and speaking of telephone numbers, Sag Harbor is apparently out of 725 exchanges. So, now 725 is the new 212! Be afraid of a slew of foreign and alien 3 digit extensions heading to a neighborhood near you!

Finally, they're getting ready for business at the old Farmhouse/Laundry restaurant. Apparently the former bartender and manager of Nichols, Colin Keilor is
getting ready to launch a new restaurant at the East Hampton location . From what I hear, they're looking at a Memorial Day opening. I don't know what the name of the place will be but I wish them the best of luck getting it together. I always loved the space at the Farmhouse/Laundry/Purple Cow but having been in there a few months ago, I can tell you the place was looking a little beat and needed a ton of work.
